Finding and using your OBD-II port

Every modern Alfa Romeo has an OBD-II diagnostic port — the same 16-pin connector workshops use for fault codes is how most supported ECUs are read and written without touching the hardware.
This guide shows you where to find the port, what plugs into it, and what a read or write session looks like from the driver’s seat.

- The interface cable or device for your read tool, plus the laptop it pairs with.
- Your owner’s manual (the fastest way to the exact port location for your model).
01Locate the port
On most Alfa Romeo models the OBD-II port sits in the driver’s footwell area — under the dashboard near the steering column, sometimes behind a small flip-down cover or trim panel.
If it is not immediately visible, check your owner’s manual index under "diagnostic socket" or "EOBD" — the manual shows the exact spot for your model and year.
02Inspect before connecting
Look into the connector before plugging anything in: the 16 pins should be straight and clean, with nothing corroded or pushed back into the housing.
A damaged port causes flaky communication — exactly what you do not want halfway through a session. If pins look suspect, have the port checked before reading.
03Connect your tool
Seat the connector fully — it should slide in firmly without force. Connect the other end to your laptop or device before switching the ignition on, so the tool sees the ECU from the start.
Most tools want ignition ON with the engine OFF for a read session. Your tool’s instructions for your exact ECU are the authority — follow its prompts over any general advice.
Never force the plug. If it does not seat, something is misaligned — forcing bends pins and turns a five-minute job into an electrical repair.
04What a session looks like
During a read or write the tool streams data through the port for anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. The car should be left completely alone: doors closed, no accessories switched on or off, key untouched.
Stable battery voltage matters more than anything else — a maintainer or charger on the battery keeps the session alive while the ignition powers the electronics.

- The connector will not seat
- Check the orientation (the D-shaped shroud only fits one way) and look for a bent pin or an obstruction in the housing. Never force it — align it and it slides in.
- The tool powers up but sees no ECU
- Confirm ignition is ON, then check the port has power: on many cars the OBD socket shares a fuse with accessory circuits (cigarette lighter and similar), so a blown accessory fuse can silently kill the port. Your manual’s fuse chart shows which one.
- Communication drops mid-session
- Usually voltage or a loose plug. Connect a battery maintainer, re-seat the connector, and avoid touching the cable during the session. If it keeps dropping, try a different cable — they fail more often than ports.
